For ten dollars, you can sponsor a cute, yellow, numbered ducky. If your ducky wins the race, you win a trip to Florida or somesuch. The money benefits the American Cancer Society and local charities.
I met a couple friends on the bridge, festooned already with ducky sponsors, young and old. The duckies were released by raft upriver. They meandered with no great haste downstream, in comical juxtaposition to the classic racetrack soundtrack played over loudspeaker, riverside. All of a sudden, the first ducky plummeted over the falls: if this event fails to fill you with ridiculous glee, you are not alive. Then it's a short stretch to the bridge. Everyone runs from one side to the other as the duckies pass under. Finally it's the home stretch (pictured above), and the winning ducky is hand-picked downstream before the rest cuddle into the net until next year.
